303 Stainless Bar

Product Description

Chromium-nickel stainless steel with added sulfur or selenium and phosphorus to improve machinability and non-seizing properties. It is the most free machining of the chromium-nickel grades. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and is not hardenable by heat treatment. Tensile strength and hardness can be increased by cold working.

Specifications

ASTM A314, ASTM A320, ASTM A582, AMS 5640

Weldability

Fair

Corrosion Resistance

Maximum corrosion resistance in the annealed condition. Free machining elements reduce overall corrosion resistance.

Type 304 / 304L Stainless Bar

Product Description

Type 304 is the basic "18-8" chromium-nickel stainless steel. It combines excellent mechanical properties with remarkable resistance to many corrosive agents encountered in domestic and industrial use. It is useful where sanitation and cleanliness are important. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and not hardenable by heat treatment. Both hardness and tensile strength can be increased by cold working. This is an electric-furnace product manufactured to meet the exacting standards of the aircraft industry. Bars are available not only in the regular 304 analysis, but also in an extra-low-carbon analysis, known as Type 304L. The advantage of this analysis is that it precludes any harmful precipitation in the 800° F - 1500° F range, such as might otherwise occur in welding heavier sections.

Specifications

ASTM A276, ASTM A479, AMS 5639, QQ-S-763

Weldability

Excellent. L-Grade reduces intergranular corrosion at weld site Annealing after welding helps maintain maximum corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Resistance

Maximum corrosion resistance in annealed condition shows good resistance to strong oxidizing acids, such as nitric acid, and resists attack by a wide variety of organic and inorganic chemicals. Intergranular corrosion may occur if heated within or cooled through the range of 800° F - 1500° F.

309 Stainless Bar

Product Description

Type 309 is an austenitic chromium-nickel modification of Type 304 with superior heat-resisting characteristics. It offers slightly better corrosion resistance than Type 304 because of the higher percentages of both chromium and nickel. In addition, these alloys possess better creep strength than the straight chrome grades.

Specifications

ASTM A276, ASTM A479, AMS5650, QQS763

Weldability

Satisfactory

Corrosion

Resistance Annealed. Because of the higher chromium and nickel contents, the corrosion resistance of these grades is slightly better than that of Stainless Type 304.

These alloys have better corrosion resistance than Type 304 in hot petroleum products. Types 309 also has higher resistance to sulfite liquors in paper and paper pulp mills and are useful for handling nitric acid, nitric sulfuric acid mixtures, acetic, citric and lactic acids. If exposed to the temperature range of 800° / 1500° F (427° to 816° C).

310 Stainless Bar

Product Description

Type 310 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that has excellent oxidation resistance. These alloys have resisted temperatures up to 2100° F (1149° C) in continuous service, and have provided good resistance to both carburizing and reducing environments. Type 310 offers better corrosion resistance than Type 304 because of the higher percentages of chromium and nickel. Stainless Type 310 possesses much better creep strength at elevated temperatures than do the straight chrome grades.

Specifications

ASTM A276, ASTM A479, AMS5651, QQ-S-763

Weldability

Satisfactory

Corrosion

Type 310 has excellent corrosion resistance and is superior to Stainless Type 304 and Type 309 in many environments.

Marine exposures have produced little to no evidence of stress corrosion for annealed or cold-rolled Types 310 up to 90% of it's yield strength.

These alloys have excellent resistance to oxidizing acids and common corrosion agents. They also have good resistance to molten salts, such as drawing and tempering salts, neutral salts, cyaniding salts and high-speed salts. If exposed to the temperature range of 800/1500° F (427/816°), Type 310S is suggested for better corrosion resistance.

Type 316 / 316L / 316L ESR / 316 VAR Stainless Bar

Product Description

Chromium-nickel stainless steel with molybdenum added to increase corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Non-magnetic in the annealed condition and not hardenable by heat treatment. The 316L grade (low carbon) precludes any harmful precipitation in the 800° F - 1500° F range that might result from welding heavier sections.

Specifications

ASTM A276, ASTM A479, AMS 5648, QQ-S-763

Weldability

Excellent. Annealing after welding recommended for maximum corrosion resistance.

Corrosion Resistance

Type 316 is more resistant to atmospheric and general corrosive conditions than any of the other standard stainless steels. They have good resistance to the corrosive effects of sulfates, phosphates, and other salts as well as reducing acids such as sulfuric, sulfurous, and phosphoric. These grades are less susceptible to pitting on applications where acetic acid vapors or solutions of chlorides, bromides, or iodides are encountered. If heated to the range of 800° - 1500° F or cooled slowly through this range, the low-carbon version (316L) should be selected to avoid intergranular corrosion.

321 Stainless Bar

Product Description

Chromium-nickel stainless steel with titanium added to control intergranular corrosion in the 800°F - 1500° F range. Non-magnetic in the annealed condition and not hardenable by heat treatment.

Specifications

ASTM A276, ASTM A314, ASTM A479, AMS 5645, QQ-S-763

Weldability

Excellent

Corrosion Resistance

Resistant to intergranular corrosion. General corrosion resistance somewhat less than Type 304. Tends to form a light rust film in corrosive atmospheres, but this rusting is not progressive. Can be heated to or cooled slowly through the 800° F - 1500° F range without intergranular corrosion.

347 Stainless Bar

Product Description

Chromium-nickel stainless steel with columbium and tantalum added to avoid intergranular corrosion in the 800°F - 1500° F range. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, and is not hardenable by heat treatment.

Specifications
